June 21, 2006 at 11:38 pmI have 11 LaCie drives and they are pretty good. In the 7 years I have been in business I’ve had 2 fail. One of the ones that failed was the 1 Terrabyte drive, just past the warranty. What a bummer! One of the 4 drives went bad. I use it now just to store things that can be replaced because I don’t trust it, plus it is really loud! I think that their QC on this particular drive is lacking, but the smaller (120g, 160g, 300g etc) ones have been fine.

June 22, 2006 at 1:39 amJust a short note, Lacie drives aren’t Lacie anything, except the exterior, the drive inside is Maxtor and they have failed on us a few times (FW800 enclosure), Lacie need to use Seagate or Western Digital.

June 22, 2006 at 4:21 amHi Chip
Any consumer/prosumer drive array system will fail eventually. Four-drive raid 0 arrays are four times more likely to fail than single drive enclosures.
That’s a part of life – accept it. That’s why my main media storage is a ADTX 15 drive array with dual, fully redundant controllers. This array can keep working with any single drive, controller, fan or power supply failure.
What gets to me is that La Cie/Maxtec will not repair the array locally once it fails outside its warantee!

June 22, 2006 at 5:39 amActually LaCie products are a lot LaCie 🙂 All design and boards are all unique to LaCie. We don’t use generic chhinese/taiwanese casings and boards like most companies in the US. And we use mostly seagate (seagate bought maxtor), western digital and hitachi.

That definitely sounds like a Maxtec issue to me. Once it’s out of warranty, they simply have the option to repair the product but at your cost instead of LaCie’s. LaCie will repair a unit out of warranty, again on your dime instead of LaCie’s.

June 22, 2006 at 1:11 pmIt maybe that Lacie wants the option to treat an out of warranty repair as a warranty repair. Once Lacie decides you will either get a warranty repair or Lacie will authorize the distributor to repair it at your cost.

In other words, don’t speculate on a public forum about what’s inside a product unless you really know what’s inside that product. Thanks for the update Mat.

June 22, 2006 at 5:15 pmThanks for chiming in here Mat. That’s good info to know.
Now that Francois has had his original issue acknowledged and it is being looked into, maybe it is time to take the change the title of this thread?

June 22, 2006 at 5:38 pmtoo funny gary! Since France is where his issue is being handled, maybe it should be “Viva LaCie!”
