DOF with lens blur makes dark borders
Hello.
Q1:
I have some 1920 x 1080 footage and want to make DOF with the lens blur filter. Problem: At the edges of the picture I get a dark border in the blurred parts (width depends on depth of effect).
How can I get rid of this without scaling it up?
The same in 1280 x 720 doesn´t make this problem.
Second question: I´m not very happy with the built in lens blur effect. Frischlufts lenscare for instance actually does a better job but it´s a bit expensive. Does someone know any alternatives?

Can’t help you with the second question, but to get rid of the border problem click on the “repeat edge pixels”

Hmmm….
Which version of After Effects are you using? I’m CS3 AE Version 8 (Mac OS X)… And it is the last checkbox in the effects window…

“Repeat edge pixels” is an option of fast blur and it also would make sense here – unfortunately lens blur does not support this feature (or I can´t find it?!?).
Any ideas besides that?

As I already wrote, I´m using AE 7.0 Prof.
And it is the last checkbox in the effects window…
Are you sure? Here it´s “Stretch Map to Fit”…

Here’s a SUPER-Silly workaround:
Make a 2nd copy of your footage using Fast blur with repeat edge pixels.
Put that layer below the lens blurred layer. Now the Fast blur layer will fill in in the areas of partial opacity…It’s a silly workaround but it “works” — I just tried it…
