Does the Sony FX7 Wireless Monitoring?
Hey, y’all.
I’m checking out the Sony FS7 (and MkII). It seems that the camera offers wireless monitoring and control, albeit limited functionality. I can’t quite put my finger on exactly how the monitoring works or how effective it is.
Say I’ve got a crew helping with a video (I’m a corporate videographer, usually talking heads and product videos), can the art director and makeup stylist just view the shot on their phones? I’m sure there might be some lag and color issues, but as far as composition, would that work?
Seems like a really cool feature, but it almost seems too good to be true.
Also, I watched the tutorial on controlling the camera from a device. Does that work with laptops? Or only handheld? And is that part fully functional? Really, all I’d need is some simple controls, like focus check, minor iris or ISO, and a start/stop record button…
I appreciate any help/feedback you can offer.

If you buy the upgraded WiFi module, CBK-WA100, you can monitor via WiFi. Otherwise, it’s just camera control.

You also need the FS7 Extension Unit so you can get a 12v tap from a V-mount-type battery to power this module.
I’ve never done this, but some reports say it’s a bit buggy. Definitely a clunky process to get it set up. You might have an easier time running a wireless SDI connection, though it will probably be more expensive…unless you don’t already own the extension unit, in which case, go with a third party Teradek solution (or similar).
