does it matter if external drive is 16mb or 8mb cache?
i am about to buy a firewire drive and need to know if it matters to edit on.

Drives are incredibly inexpensive now. Splurge a little and double the cache, after all it is there to improve the performance of the drive. Will you notice a dramatic difference? Probably not.
