Does anybody know how to create this effect? X-particles maybe?

185423553.jpgI’m trying to obtain a result with X-particles, and any alternatives are welcomed. These “abstract colorful waves” appear like a mixture of particles/smoke/fire/hair/ ink in water/light trails, and I can’t tell which simulation approach would work best. Maybe blur comes into the equation somewhere? I guess that’s what makes them abstract.
I want the colorful smoke/mist to shape-shift into different elements and look like above reference images during the states between morphing. I’m to the point where the particles are morphing to different shapes, but I’m still not getting a good visual effect when I render the material. (https://vimeo.com/68854403)
If possible, the animation would have multicolored plumes interacting with each other, as opposed to a single emitter with a random selection of particle colors from a gradient.
Any help is really really appreciated.
