The Vegas 8 manual says that the Dolby AC-3 encoder can’t be used commercially without a license. Same for the MP3, and MPEG-2. Do you have to purchase seperate licenses? Does this apply to someone doing home video conversion to DVD as a business? What about if I create a 30sec commercial spot for a local business and it airs?

This applies to someone who wants to create a new application that includes the MPEG and AC3 encoder. The results you get from using these encoders, who Sony pay the license fees for, you can distribute freely, sell or do whatever you want with.

I assume you are not planning to write any kind of video editing software.

I see…I just wanted to double check. No, I’m not going to write an application. Just want to distribute DVD’s and videos that I edit and author. The way they phrased it in the manual suggested that everyone needed to obtain seperate licenes.
