Do new C4D versions install over previous versions?
I may be upgrading from R11 to R11.5 Broadcast but I wonder whether new versions replace older ones or are they installed separately like Carrara? I wanted to be sure I had access to the old version, if possible, to ensure I could still open some of my more complicated models built in that version. Also has anyone heard if CS Tools is compatible with either R11.5 or 12?

It does not go over the previous version, it makes a new folder.
CS tools work fine.Plug Ins do not work. You need to get the R12 of plug ins. C4D cafe has a pretty good list look for it in the menu bar at the top.
