Do I Really Need AAE?
Posted by Tim Smith on March 1, 2012 at 2:22 pmHi,
I been using Sony Vegas for about 1.5 years now and I like it alot. I basically create gaming edits and montages. Alot of my peers are suggesting that I move over to AAE, suggesting that I can make far better montages with the tool.
I was wondering your thoughts on that. Can I accomplish the same type of work with Vegas as with AAE? If I were to get the Boris plugin set for Vegas would that make it as good for effects and stuff.
Thanks in advance

March 1, 2012 at 3:04 pmIt all depends on what you are doing. After Effects certainly has more special FX capabilities than Vegas alone does but that’s all AE does. It’s not a video editor like Vegas. If you purchase Boris RED for Vegas Pro you would have more capabilities than AE since AE can’t do 3D titles, etc. that Boris RED can. Boris RED can also run many AE plug-ins. So the direct answer to your question is no, you don’t need AE. The real question is would you use anything that AE provides that Vegas can’t do.

March 1, 2012 at 4:01 pmAE is basically for handling advanced motion graphics,
so if you arent in that field, it isnt necessary.
Your friends tell you to move over to AE, they are not
advising you well, AE is not an NLE (editing software).
Get Boris as John mentioned, and you are ok.Steve Rhoden

March 1, 2012 at 5:58 pmWell the Continuum Complete for Vegas Pro is a little expensive for me. I downloaded and installed the trial version of the Boris FX instead, but I don’t see anything when I open Vegas. Was there something else I was supposed to do? I did notice in the installer there was no sony vegas 64bit only 32bit(the one I chose).

Then you need to use the 32-bit version of Vegas. I don’t believe that Boris has updated the Boris FX plug-in for 64-bit yet.

March 1, 2012 at 10:45 pmDumb question, will 32bit vegas work on 64bit box? If so where do I get the 32bit version. Also, is there a decrease in performance with the 32 bit versus the 64 bit?

Yes 32-bit Vegas works fine on Windows 64-bit and you can have both the 32-bit version and 64-bit version of Vegas installed at the same time.
[Tim Smith] ” If so where do I get the 32bit version.”
You get it from the Sony downloads page.

[Tim Smith] “Also, is there a decrease in performance with the 32 bit versus the 64 bit?”
No, performance is about the same. The real advantage of 64-bit is that you can have larger projects because you can address more memory. Other than that, they are pretty much the same.

I have Vegas Pro 10. Do I have to upgrade to 11 in order to get the 32 bit version?
