  • Do “codecs” interfere with each other?

In my attempt to find a codec that would work with Vegas 6 and .avi files from a still digital camera, I downloaded a whole host of codecs. After downloading, “installed” each one, and tried to see if they work.
“Work” is defined that Vegas 6 “imports” an .avi file, and it shows up on the timeline with the video on one timeline and its audio on another line below it.
Most have not proven successful. (All that gets imported into a Vegas timeline is the audio.)
One, “Motion JPEG v 3.2.4” seems to work with Vegas, but not with another program: Windows Movie Maker.
Question: Do these codecs, after installation, interfere with each other? Or…does each program (such as Vegas) search the PC for the “right” codec and uses it? Do I have to uninstall each un-successful codec?
    Thanks!
    John
