I’m in a bit of uncharted territory, and was hoping some of you could help me make a decision…
I’m trying to figure out what the best output for mastering a film shot on a red camera would be. We cut h264 files on an express pro machine, and now will re-transcode the red files to either dnxhd (220 or 175) or uncompressed hd for a reconform in a rented avid bay (basically an online session). From there, my DP will take that file, and do some minor color grading on his final cut system before final output.

I was thinking that if I keep it uncompressed through the avid bay and into FCP that there would be more depth to do the color correction. Is this the case, or will the dnxhd do the same thing, and cut the time loading it into the machine, etc.? Is there something I am missing? Thanks in advance.

If you do uncompressed, just make sure the storage with Avid you rent can handle Uncompressed HD. meaning not all storage can handle the bit rate. I would just use DNX220 10 bit
