.DNG files from 7D RAW looks horrible in Lite
Posted by Johan Windh on April 22, 2014 at 2:42 pmHi,
I’m trying to learn a workflow to create proxies with Lite and then round trip then through NLE and grade.
However, when I add the .dng’s to my Media Pool, they look horrendous:
If I import my .dng’s to After Effects, they look normal, and the RAW-window opens up as usual.
Any ideas?
Kind Regards,
Johan

April 23, 2014 at 8:09 amOn the occasions when I’m forced to use 7D or 5D footage, I request the editor convert the footage to ProRes 422 log first. It’s still an 8-bit format, so (IMHO) Raw is not gonna make a helluva lotta difference.
Some good advice on the EOSHD site here:
Note that I’ve worked on a few fairly high-budgeted TV shows that have slipped in 7D footage and we were able to match it to much more-costly cameras — in small doses, all with a ProRes workflow.

April 23, 2014 at 7:24 pmIf you are shooting with Magic Lantern Raw you have in fact 14 bit RAW.

Whatever it is, it looks crappy to me. Not a fan of DSLRs, particularly the rolling shutter and noisy blacks issue. And I’ve seen that with the 5D, 7D, and whatever else is out there. Toy cameras. -

Marc, I guess you haven’t seen the footage from the newly released Magic Lantern firmware for the 5D Mark iii. Prior to this the camera could only shoot RAW stills. This is a whole different ball game. Now would it be my go to camera of choice, no, not when I can shoot 35mm or Alexa or Red, but the RAW out of this camera is clean.

April 25, 2014 at 8:43 am“Newly released” I might believe, but the last 7D project I saw in December was crappy. I’ll say this: it looks better in many ways than a $50,000 Ikegami standard-def camera did in 1995.

April 25, 2014 at 5:56 pmYou can’t compare the 7D to the 5D Mark iii.

April 26, 2014 at 6:29 amThey’re still toy cameras. I’ll grade the footage, but only under protest.
