  • distribution amp out to video camera (3.5mm mic input)

I have a Sony Handycam. I want to record the audio/sound off the music group’s distribution amp.

I know I could run a 1/4″ headphone out to my mic input of my video camera, but I’m afraid of hum since such a skinny cable could produce such.

Can I run, from XLR “output” from the amp to my video camera’s mic input? And, if so, besides an adapter from XLR to 3.5mm mini plug will I need anything to reduce the line’s level into the mic input?

Or…if there’s any other way to record the audio from the amp to my video camera, any and all advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

The size of the cable has nothing to do with hum, but the impedance mismatch will induce all kinds of noise. The headphone output is low impedance, 8- to 32-ohms, and the input circuitry in the camera is high impedance on the order of 15K ohms or more.

I use a matching transformer like this one:

This is a Radio Shack XLR Jack-to-1/4″ Plug Adapter/Transformer, Part Number: 274-016
For those who equate Radio Shack with cheap parts – these are made by Shure.

However, I am usually disappointed with the quality of the sound from the house mixer. The house sound is adjusted for the seated audience, not for the video. I always have at least two sources of audio for any project.

Stephen, thank you for your response. Adding the actual part and # was a plus, many thanks.
