I must back up here and say that, though I have FCPX at work, I am working now on a project at home on FCP 7.

I am mixing quicktime files and mp4 files. The .mov is my “base” track, and the mp4s are my cut-ins.

However. . .the picture jumps during the transitions. I thought this might just be in playback, but when I exported the whole file out as a quicktime file, the jumps had become major GLITCHES in the video.

Is it true what I am hearing that FCP 7 does not like mp4 files? (The codec on the mp4s are H.264 AAC, whereas the quicktime files are H.264 Linear PCM)

Do I have to convert these mp4 files to something else? Or do I have to take the whole project to work and use FCP X?

    Thanks,
    Glenn

Yes. FCP7 does not like mp4.

Also, what’s the frame rate of your timeline and incoming clips? FCP7 wasn’t very good at mixing frame rates, either.

Thanks, Jeremy. I was afraid that was the problem; can these mp4 clips be converted to .mov files in MPEG Streamclip? Or is just closing the barn door after the horse got out?

It is a good idea to trans-code your footage for FCP7 as H.264 will give you a lot of hangups in my experience. Even better if you ditch the whole thing and work in FCPX, you will have less headaches in the long run

Thank you both. As a test, I ran a few files through Streamclip, converting them all to Quicktime ProRes 422; put them it into FCP 7, and it “seemed” to work. But, yeah, I’ll be working after hours alot on that office iMac (FCP X) just so I can sleep nights. Thank you again, good to be back here with helpful and learned mentors ~ Keep safe!
