Disk Drive Restore Resolved
First, I want to take an opportunity to thank all of the kind people who offered advice to resolving my problem with grabbing data from a bad disc drive. It definitely inspired me to find the path to a successful conclusion. I would like to share the solution here in case my experience can assist another person in the future.
To quickly the review the problem again, my disk drive went bad and I could not grab my current projects from the disc. Here’s what resolved the issue:
Since I was unable to get any other PC to recognize the disc drive as a slave due to the non-stop errors, I decided to approach the issue by using the PC the disc drive was used on originally. So here are the steps I used:
1. I purchased an internal hard drive and installed it in the old computer.
2. I used the system restore PCs that came with the computer to restore the base Windows ME operating system.
3. I installed the bad drive as a slave drive.
4. I booted and began receiving the nasty drive sounds, but eventially I made it to the desktop where Windows ME was running using the new drive as the primary. I could see the slave D drive.
5. I right clicked on the D drive and selected Explore.
6. There they were! All of my precious folders and files. I dragged them to my active C drive one at a time. Periodically the PC would freeze as I apparently accessed a corrupted file. But I only had a total of 4 files I could not recover. So I think using the same PC and the operating system the drive came from was the key. I attempted the above steps on a number of different PCs, but only the original PC and OS did the trick.
