  • Disconnecting Hard Drive and storing for a period of time?

Posted by Arthur Luhn on May 29, 2007 at 7:42 pm

    Hello,

Does anything happen to a hard drive that is full of data, and is disconnected and stored for a period of time? Does the data deterioriate or corrupt over time?

Has anyone done this or experienced this?

    I would appreciate feedback..

    Thanks

    Hi,

I’ve heard that the thing most likely to go bad on a hard drive that is stored for a long time is the bearings. But I would guess that the motor could also go bad. The actual discs are just as good as tape though as far as magnetic storage mediums go.

Eventually the magnetic field of the earth will erase or drastically degrade any magnetic recording medium, with the exception of magneto optical, I believe.

With how cheap hard drives are nowadays I would suggest just planning on moving data from old archive drives to new drives every couple of years. In order to save money you could even re-use the old archive drives to backup stuff you don’t care as much about.

    Good luck,

    Tim

For three-five years nothing should go wrong with drive. However if you planning longer then should invest in Tape based backup solution that are going to be considerable more costly. Event that will have problems after 8-10 years.

The only proven medium for 70+ years is yes the FILM… but out of our leage.
