I tried connecting mac FCP external video firewire output –> mac firewire input (with iChat prefs = line in).

So far I’ve been unsuccessful because I can’t select “External video firewire NTSC” in my FCP because it doesn’t recognize a camera/deck control…the 2nd mac must somehow serve as the “camera.”

Do I need to restart the 2nd mac? Reconnect firewire cabling?

Otherwise, I’ll have to continue with the 2 A2D conversions as I’d set up before.

    Well….

    I have a client 30 miles away with a PC. I have 2 Macs, a G5 and a PowerBook.

I connect the PB to the camera, & point the camera at my G5 running FCP. I focus in on the Canvas window. I log into iChat, she logs into AOL Instant Messenger for the PC. I initiate a Video Chat, and away we go!! I use a miniDV camera, not a webcam. The client says she gets much better results on her end when I use that camera than with “real” webcams she’s seen.

Occasionally we get dropped and we have to back up a few seconds. She has a webcam. I can see her reaction, and we usually can either talk over the telephone, or just use the VOIP within iChat/AIM.

    It works fabulously for us!!

What I don’t know is if it’s technically “secure”. That’s not an issue for us because we don’t work on sensitive projects.
