  • Dimensions of two videos match in project, but not in render

Posted by Mark Lynch on December 10, 2010 at 11:09 am

I’m editing together an .avi video at 16:9, and an .mov video at 4:3. In Vegas, I cropped and masked both sources so that (in the preview window) the dimensions are perfectly aligned, and the aspect ratio is an unusual shape, but is semi-widescreen, and they both align perfectly; the edges of both video sources are completely in line.
Here is the .mov 4:3 cropping: https://i53.tinypic.com/afew5u.jpg
Here is the .avi 16:9 cropping: https://i53.tinypic.com/o55lr9.jpg

Here is the rendered final product (you can see the two videos in the fade):

When I render the video, the aspect ratio is fine on both (no stretching or anything) but the .avi video is larger than the .mov video. So when one fades into the other, the dimensions don’t align and it’s obvious they’re two different sources. I don’t know what to do since the preview shows both aligning perfectly. How could I solve this?
    Thank you

What are your project properties? (i.e., width, height, pixel aspect ratio)

What are your render properties? (i.e., width, height, pixel aspect ratio, codec)

What are the properties of the two video sources? (i.e., width, height, pixel aspect ratio, codec)

    Thankyou for responding…

    Project Properties(Under “File->Properties”?):
    Template: Custom (720×480, 29.970 fps)
    WidthxHeight: 720×480
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0000 (Square)

    Render Properties:
Codec: WMV 5 Mbps 720-25p (I use that for all my videos
    WidthxHeight: HD 1280×720
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000 (Square))

Properties of the two video sources:

Codec: raw AVI (from mini-DV camera)
    WidthxHeight: 720×480
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen)

Codec: MOV (from digital picture camera)
    WidthxHeight: 640×480
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0000 (Square)

Well, that’s your problem right there. If you want no surprises when rendering, set your project properties to match your render properties.

Ohhh okay, thanks! So I have the option to either render in the already-established dimensions of the project properties, or change project properties to 1280×720 and re-align the two video sources in the preview window.

Thank you for the advice, I didn’t even know the difference that could make!

Yea, whenever you are mixing resolutions, it’s best to keep your project the same as your render properties so that any masking or cropping will stay in place and not shift because you are rendering to a different resolution. Glad I could help.
