digitizing & minimizing quality loss (might be the last we see of these tapes!)
We are making an archive and back up of the entire underwater archaeology video bank for the country. We need to capture the tapes with the highest quality image and leave the individually labeled quicktimes in folders on a RAID 1 hard drive. The tapes then go into a federal storage house in Mexico. All we will have access to for future editing will be our digitized clips.
FCP-How do we digitize/quicktime convert and loose the least amount of quality?
Is there a way to export QTConversion in a batch, or is it really a matter of exporting them one by one?We are now digitizing hdv 1080i60 on FCP with AppleProRes422 then QTconvert 8bit uncompressed at 29.97fps? Is that the best we can do or is there another “uncompressed” format that can minimize our quality loss?

Don’t understand why you are doing this in 2 steps, why the ProRes if you are wanting uncompressed. Just capture uncompressed to begin with or leave them in ProRes.

I agree with Michael. If you capture as ProRes the only thing you accomplish by transcoding to 8-bit uncompressed is creating a much larger file with 2-bits of information cast to the four winds. Not a very efficient use of your time, your storage, or your information.

I agree with Michael and David.
You are capturing in 10b (Prores), then back to 8b.
The second step makes no sense.

thank you…you are right of course. worked fine with hdv settings and with 8bit uncompressed.
