    Hello,

A few quick questions about digitizing with HDV.

    1. We have rented an HDV deck to digitize from for an hour long show we’re working on. My friend was told that, for some reason, we need to rent another deck to get proper timecode out of the HDV deck. Is this true?

    2. The guy i’m working for wanted to do an online edit and bring the footage in native HDV. However, he doesn’t have an HD monitor to view it on. If we wanted to do it low res, how would we do that? Digitize at DV NTSC and then do a Final Cut Uprez afterward? Is this difficult?

    3. He doesn’t have an HD monitor, but has an HD television. How would we set it up to view it on that television? What kind of card or box would we need to get?

    4. I know someone who shot and cut a short film on HDV and didn’t have an HD monitor to view it on. What he did was to digitize the footage at HDV, then do a batch export of all the clips at DV quality. So he had two copies of each clip: 1 in HDV, 1 in DV. Then he imported the DV clips, cut his segment using those, then relinked the sequence to the HDV clips and was fine. Is this a better workflow then doing the Final Cut Uprez?

Thanks a lot for all your help.

    What deck do you HAVE?
    What deck was RECOMMENDED?

Regardless, all HDV decks and camcorders will output TC via FW (along with the A/V), so I don’t know why you’d need one deck over another (unless there was a TECH PROBLEM with the one you have).

Well, I the only problem I see is that HDV is a whole different puppy! When digitizing HDV native at low res DV and then recapturing later does present some timecode problems because of the nature of HDV. Most of us get around ths problem by digitizing at a better codec like DVCPRO HD or Uncompressed.
