  • Digitizing footage from an NTSC dv tape to PAL

Posted by Jburkett on April 30, 2007 at 8:41 pm

I am working in Illinois and have a client from Mongolia who had me shoot some footage for him that he would like to send back home to another party to be edited. I know little or nothing about the difference between NTSC and PAL and am also unsure if what I am asking is even possible. I basically need to just digitize the raw footage which was shot using a Sony TRV 900 onto a fuji film mini dv video cassette, and export it as a mpeg2 file in PAL format and burn it onto a dvd. If there is a site or a program that could dumb it down for me it would be even better. Let me know if more information is needed to figure out a solution. Thank you.

If I were you I’d send this off to a dub house to get transferred to a PAL mpeg.

http://www.globlvideo.com is a good place in Chicago ( I don’t know what part of Illinois you are in). Talk to Liz.

YOu can also capture this in FCP, use Nattress Standards conversion (www.nattress.com) to convert to PAL, then make a PAL DVD using compressor. Compressor can also do a PAL conversion for you, but it takes a while and your results may vary.

“… mini dv video cassette, and export it as a mpeg2 file in PAL format and burn it onto a dvd”

And how does he edit it using the DVD?

BEST thing is to get it transferred form your NTSC miniDV to a PAL miniDV by a professional dub house. Add it to your cost and send it off.
(This assumes you asked what format they wanted it on, and they said a PAL miniDV – I believe Mongola broadcasts in SECAM.)

Most actual broadcast in SECAM countries is done in PAL these days. But yeah I’d double-check. For standards conversions you alwasy want to get it done professionally. Compressor will do it but it will take an eon to render and probably not look any good. Get it transferred to a PAL Dv tape. Then you have a good master to work with.
