  • Digitizing DVCPro HD at 1080pA24 from shot on a HDX900

    Hello to all,

I have been dealing with an on going issue that has been going on since I took over for another editor at this production company.

These guys have footage shot on the HDX900 at 1080/23.98 I don’t think the DP shot at 1080pA24. The original footage has never been captured. They used the Firestore100 and the entire piece has been edited from that footage.

Ok, now any time the camera is panning (all of this footage is shot with steadycam, so pretty much everything is moving) there is a “strobing/stutter” that is clearly visible.

So I did some tests and it seems that the Firestore100 can’t capture 1080p24 correctly. We shot new footage at 720 and everything is fine.

But, I still of the “strobing” in all of the 1080 footage. So I did some more tests and it seems that the only way that I can get the footage to look good is to capture it at 1080pA24 through firewire. When I tried our AJA LHe, it reduced the problem, but didn’t make it perfect. By capturing at 1080pA24 I got nice pretty smooth motion.

I guess my question would be, what problems could I run into down the line if I ReDigitize all 50 something tapes at 1080pA24 if the camera shot them at 1080p24? (I asked Panavision and they said that the camera has two settings 1080p24 and 1080pA24)

Our main end is DVD, but the owner does what the option of broadcasting in the future.

I know that there is the option to capture at 1080i60 and do the pull down later. This is getting into something that I have never done before. What is the difference of 1080i60 and doing the pull down later vs capturing at 1080pA24?

Lots of questions and stream of consciousness I know. If anyone has any thoughts I would love to hear them. Thanks a bunch in advance.

Check out this website for the differences in pulldown patterns:

Read up on that first and write back with more ?s.

That’s not an issue. When you have 24p captured footage, you can output 1080i60 no problem. A Kona or Decklink will add 3:2 pulldown automatically. So there’s no reason to capture 1080i60, and there’s no easy way to remove the pulldown once you’ve started editing.

Thanks Sean and Jeremy for your responses. I have read that article by DVFilm and I know the difference between the 2323 and 2332 pulldowns and how the are captured in the camera.

But it is how the two differ in post that I haven’t experienced. The only thing that I know is that the “1080p24” footage that was recorded to the Firestore100 is bad.

Digitizing through my AJA at 1080psf 23.98 DVCProHD is better

And digitizing through firewire at 1080pA24, to my eyes, looks perfect.

I guess this is just something that I haven’t done before, so I am just freaked out and could use a little reassurance that 1080pA24 is a good way to go for this footage.

    Thanks again,

Okay. But do you understand why to shoot 24pA or 24p?

Basically, if you shoot 24pA, you have to remove the pulldown on capture or after capture due to the motion characteristics of 24pA (which you are familiar with).

With 24p footage, you can edit at 60i without removing the pulldown, but it is also possible to remove the pulldown from 24p footage as well. It’s just not as automatic as 24pA footage. The only way that I know of to remove 24pA footage is to capture via firewire and remove while capturing, or capture via firewire @ 60i and remove with Cinema Tools/FCP. You cannot remove 24pA footage while capturing with a Kona or other capture device.
