Digital break-up effect or transition
I am attempting to try to simulate a digital transmission and I am looking for a way to make it look like there’s break-up in the “feed” – I know that I can achieve a similar look using the bad TV effect in FCP but that’s more of an analog signal transmission look. Does anyone know of anything that is meant to simulate digital breakup? I was planning on compressing the video then re-importing it into FCP to give it the look of a web stream – but I would still like the effect of the video “breaking up” like the signal goes in and out. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I would try to do something like freezing the image and applying some Mosaic to fake the compression macroblocks.

I would run your footage through compressor at various very low-quality settings and mix it back into your cut. Or use a free/cheap screen capturing software… some of them will create artifacts for you (’cause they’re cheap and not flawless).
If you know Motion, try this though… create a few small pixel like shapes (within a group) and use the replicator. Then randomize various parameters like color, position, etc. It will look like random pixelation.

Thanks for the help. As it turns out, I found a plug-in that was exactly what I needed. In case you might happen to need something like this in the future the plug-in is called Glitch, and is part of the Core Melt Motion Pack. It does exactly what I needed it to do. I also added a Strobe effect and now the video looks like a troubled digital video stream. Thanks again!
