[Mickey Power] “Interesting if the MXO2 can handle this, given it’s portability. It would hardly be a run and gun affair with a macbook pro and silver box hanging off but for shooting something with good logistical support this could be a step up.

The AJA IoHD has been used for situations like this for 2 years now. You can capture to ProRes directly from HD-SDI. It has also had all the conversion features since the day it was released. I know folks are getting excited about the updates to the MXO 2, but quite honestly it’s playing catch-up to the Io HD. It’s great to have another choice, but I love the quotes that “Matrox really cares about us” like they are developing something revolutionary by adding the conversion features.

[Mickey Power] “No comments on photo jpeg for uprezzing? I’ve used it a lot for programs played off hard drives and downrezzing to mpeg2 for DVDs and it is very clean.”

I have never used that format in all my editing and don’t ever see a need to so I can’t comment on that.

    Hey Walter,
I think you missed my point. I meant it is good to know that a company you invested in keeps investing in us. Whether it is revolutionary or not is not the point. I’m sure the ioHD is a good product as well, but when it came to my needs the Matrox MXO2 proved to be the best! And now with the news that it is still getting better, CC support (BTW,I do think this is BIG!) Scaling on Capture…it seems my choice was the right one.
I urge all my FCP peers to give the Matrox MXO2 a real hard look. It is not only “another choice” but I’m sure for a lot of us out there it is THE choice. And the price is right 🙂

    Hi Mario and Walter

Fascinated to read your varying appraisals of IO and MXO2. Pity to bury it here in this thread.

Why not start new thread and get broad representations of views?

Anyway, respectfully I repeat my question, are the results coming out camera SDI markedly better than the images compressed as long GOP?

    Thanks

    Mickey

    Mickey,

I’ve been using my MXO2 to capture directly from my JVC GY-HD111E to pro-res on a MBP on location. There is no SDI out, so I use component – You can really see the difference. Looks amazing. Test it.

After it’s recorded to the card, you will see little difference. It’s already recorded with the heavy compression of that format. Especially wide shots suffer with the codec and any areas of hard light to dark. It’s unfortunate because the raw feed from those cameras are gorgeous.

Where you WILL see a difference is if you output to something like the Kona / Io HD and capture to ProRes so at least you won’t be piling on even more compression as you edit and have to render filters and such.

So SDI out or straight from the card, you’re still going to have all the heavy compression. I don’t really see much difference between them. Again, if you take a live feed from the camera on set, you will absolutely see a difference, the image will be much cleaner.

[Mario Rubertis] “I think you missed my point. I meant it is good to know that a company you invested in keeps investing in us. “

Again, you’re describing AJA as well. I’ve been using their products I think 5 years now (maybe longer) and all they do is just keep coming out with better products and they are continuously upgrading what we can do with our products. The Kona 6.0.3 drivers are a great example with added features for a free download. In fact the Kona 3 is essentially a brand new product now even though it came out two years ago just through the updated drives that have come out for free since it was released. I have not had to purchase any new cards for our machines, because they just keep getting better, for free.

I still see Matrox as the company that left a lot of Mac users hanging a few years ago after they had invested their money into that product line, and then Matrox left the Mac altogether.

Yes, it’s nice that they have this product out there and I know Shane Ross is having success with his, but what Matrox is doing now is what any company SHOULD do. Support their customers after the purchase. AJA has truly been a leader in support after the sale as is attested both on this forum and others throughout the Cow.

That’s my point about being amused with the gushing over the updates. It should not be a big deal, it should be the way any company treats the customer who invests in their products. Maybe I’ve just been spoiled by the way AJA treats its customers.

    Walter,
Well I guess Matrox is on the right path. I mean the MXO2 has only been out a few months and they are already giving us nuggets of goodies that were unexpected.

[walter biscardi] Yes, it’s nice that they have this product (MXO2) out there and I know Shane Ross is having success with his (MXO2), but what Matrox is doing now is what any company SHOULD do.

    Walter,
Thank you for acknowledging Matrox as a great company! As an artist using their gear as part of my craft, I feel as though I couldn’t make a better decision.
