  • DigiBeta into FCP- best way and how??

    Got a big problem.

I need to capture some digibeta tapes into FCP and looking for advice in the best way to do this.
I am constrained by a budget so a standards converting house is not really an option.

Would something like going out of the Camera or deck into a Canopus ADVC-110 or Formac StudioDV work without to much loss of quality. Or is there a better way?

    Any help would be great!

AJA and Black Magic Design make products that will allow you to capture SDI out of the digi which will preserve the quality. Take a look at their web sites if the budget allows.

If you need to use the DV converter because of cost, just take one of the composite video outs and the analog audio outs from the digi machine to the converter. You will need a BNC to RCA adaptor for the video and XLR to RCA adaptor for the audio. If you need to capture four channels from the digi you will likely need to do it in two passes.

You will take a quality hit. How much is acceptable depends on the context

    thanks for the info.

I’ve managed to get hold off a J30 digibeta deck with a firewire out. I’ll be capturing this using a Powerbook, wondering if I should get a PCMCIA Firewire 800 Card to help with the bus speed and data transfer??

    thanks again for the info.

If you are capturing to a firewire drive I would get a pcmcia fw800 card to keep the deck and the drive on separate buses. I would not suggest capturing to the system drive.

    Best,

    Tom
