Basically, I want to know what uncompressed codec I should be using to go from Avid to AE. I’ve read elsewhere on the site that the Blackmagic and Aja codecs are better than the Quicktime Animation codec but I don’t know why and which one is best. Thanks.

Why not use the Avid codecs? If you AE box is on another system than your Avid system, the Avid codecs are available for download from Avid’s support site. Then export out of the Avid as a QT “same as source” and then import into AE. Or use a QT reference file if you Avid and AE are on the same box.

Other options are the fantastic Sheervideo codec from BitJazz.com which is quick, lossless and slightly smaller than animation or uncompressed. The encoder trial is free for 20 days, then you’ll need to purchase. The decoder is always free.

The animation codec is great, but not for video. It’s strength is in encoding graphics and other clips with large patches of solid color, and in the fact that it supports an alpha channel which most 8-bit/10-bit uncompressed formats (such as Aja/Blackmagic) do not. For running video from Avid to AE, you should stick to either the Avid codec OR 8-bit/10-bit uncompressed. If your source footage was shot in DV or something ridiculous use 8-bit, for anything above DVCPRO50 use 10-bit.
