Difficulty using the tracker in Motion
The shot: hand-held shaky POV footage of walking down an alley and up to a steel door. I want to add the text: “Stage Door” to it using Motion’s tracking features, but something is weird: in the online demos I watch, once you click on the track, a small cursor box opens up that you can direct to a tracking point. That box thingy never materializes for me, no matter what I try.

That can really only be if the Match Move’s Auto-Zoom Mode is set to NONE, or simply not set up correctly in general to begin with. You might want to check that.
Aside from that there’s also a zoomed preview of the tracking area in the Behaviors Inspector that you can use, if all else fails.
