I’m editing a video that was shot on an HVX and a DVX. The HVX captured to DVCPRO with a 1280×1080 24p. I got the Raylight encoder so I could edit them natively (thank god). The DVX captured to 720×480 at 29.97.

I’ve gotten all my clips loaded up and sync’d to their universal playback (oddly frame rate doesn’t seem to be a problem).

My question, in preview the two frame sizes obviously don’t match. What’s the best way to match these up? I could live with letterboxing the whole she-bang or “downsizing” the whole thing to the smaller frame size if it solves the problem, but since it’s obviously not the same proportions I’m confused how to proceed.

Note: we’re ending up on DVD since that probably matters.

Is the DVX footage 4:3 or 16:9?

Since your target is DVD, I would set your project to match your final delivery format and crop your footage to match that as well. This way what you see in the preview is what you will get on the DVD. If the DVX footage is 4:3 then make the whole thing 4:3.
