Different durations for audio and video when exporting from FCP 5.0.4
This is a strange problem that I have searched for an answer to for a long time.
I have a long project (1 hour 40 mins) that has been shot and edited in HDV format (1080i 50 PAL). It consists of several shorter sequences that have been lined up one after the other to create the master. This plays fine, and has a final duration of 1.38.36.19 – both video and audio. It is synced perfectly all the way through.
Now, if I export this master sequence as a quicktime movie, using current project settings, the file loses audio sync from the start of th clip amd only gets worse. It’s some 11 seconds or so out.
If I export the video and audio separately then the audio retains the correct duration that FCP’s timeline reports, but the resulting video track that FCP says is 1.38.36.19 actually comes out at 1.38.23.16! Where on earth is the export losing 13 seconds of video over an hour and a half?
There is no problem with playback within FCP itself – everything is the right length and everything plays back with no dropped frames and no loss of sync. It’s only the export that causes this issue.
System: DP 2.3 G5, 4.5GB RAM, OS X 10.4.6, FCS with all updates.
