Difference between Apple Cinema HD displays and cheaper ones
Posted by Philip Johns on March 21, 2008 at 4:11 pmAnyone notice a difference enough to justify the price difference between them? I have a Chimei at the moment which I got for around $400 but buying a mac pro and thinking of going the 23″ apple cinema displays, but at $1400 it’s quite a substantial difference in price! But damm apple knows how to make something look good!

March 21, 2008 at 4:27 pmfirst let me tell you have old information on your pricing. The 23″ Apple Display is $899 and has been for awhile.
An alternative is the New Dell Ultrasharp 24″ Display. It runs about $700-$600 depending on special.

March 21, 2008 at 4:55 pmI’m quite happy with my two Apple Cinema Displays. I especially like the extra firewire & USB ports on the back.
I also use the SpyderPro to calibrate them.

March 21, 2008 at 5:26 pmIt’s a 2-part answer. Yes, the Dells tend to be pretty much the same as the Apple displays when it comes to image quality. So you can save some money there.
But no, I doubt your $400 monitor is as good. I don’t know what you have, exactly, but for that price I’m guessing the specs are not as good as the Apple or the Dell.

March 21, 2008 at 5:28 pmI’m gonna second Steve’s suggestion for the Dells. The Apple Displays don’t show black well…it is a very dark grey. The Dell 2407s (I have the first gen 2405s) show MUCH better blacks. Plus the Apple monitors are slightly tinted green. Odd but true.
And the Dells are much cheaper…and also have USB ports on them. Go Dell.

March 21, 2008 at 6:47 pmI actually split it down the middle – I have a new APPLE 23″ and a new DELL 24″ 2408WFP which has every connection slot including HDMI which I hook up via BlackMagic Intensity Pro card no back of Mac Pro…
Warning however, this set up caused me 1 week of start up problems, 30% of the time, the screens on boot up would freeze with a Black and white staircase effect and I spent days on the phone with both Apple and Dell and my reseller, who came out, swapped RAM, played with BlackMagic Card, put it all back, then simply swapped the DELL connection to the slot on the right and the APPLE on the left slot on back of my Mac Pro/nVidia 8800 card and that did it – this above set up must have the DELL plugged in the right slot, the APPLE in the left slot…I’m happy with this set up now.

March 21, 2008 at 7:33 pmNever experienced the Green tinge with the Apple 23″ Cinema display. They do have a slight pink tinge but once calibrated with a colorimeter they fall quite neutral.

March 22, 2008 at 2:24 amIf this is just for a regular computer monitor to work on (not color grading) I gotta say 23-24″ is SOOOO last year. For less than $1000 you can get a 40-inch 1080p television w/ HDMI. The money you’ll save in eyecare and chiropractic care will pay for it 100 times over.

March 22, 2008 at 2:25 pmYes, actually the Dells are up to the 2408 series by now I believe, and with each generation have been expanding their color gamut. I believe they are the superior hardware now as Apple has not updated their panels for something like 3 years.
