Desktop Microphone for VO
Posted by Mark Weaver on April 22, 2007 at 2:05 amHi all,
I’m looking for a good, but not insanely expensive
microphone to do some voice over. I use Premier Pro
and audition to create DVDs and Podcasts.Any suggestions?
Thanks

April 22, 2007 at 2:23 amA cheap, reliable entry level mic would be the Sm58 (Shure).
That will set you down a mere 100 bucks and change. You’ll need to run XLR to your sound card. I’m not sure if you already own a mixer, but you really need it for any descent voice over work.If you feel like spending a little more, ($150), look at the 55SH (Shure as well), then you have the SM7B ($350), most other brands are going to be starting around $500.00, and well, for a $1000.00, Neumann has some really nice stuff 😉

April 22, 2007 at 3:56 amRon Lindeboom once recommended Behringer microphones and I have been absolutely amazed by the quality of the microphone. Relatively inexpensive, but good quality.

April 22, 2007 at 9:20 amI use the Shure SM58S, SM57 and Behringer XM8500, Along other mics, I find the Behringer XM8500 very good quality and freq range for the price, coupled with a inexpensive Xenyx Behringer 502 or 802 mixer or a slightly more expensive 1204 with a USB input makes a good system for voice overs.

April 22, 2007 at 3:16 pmI’ve been very pleased w/ the Samson C01U – USB Studio Condenser Microphone. Good bang for the buck and couldn’t be easier to use.

April 22, 2007 at 4:59 pmFor a microphone in that price range, you can probably go for the cheapest retailer (well, as long as it doesn’t seem too good to be true, and watch for the tiny “refurbished” word ).
Google products would be a good start since they do have store ratings.
BTW, someone did a side by side recording for the SM58 and the XM8500. I wish he didn’t use Mp3, but you’ll get an idea of what they sound like on a good pair of headphones.
Cheers,
Vince

April 23, 2007 at 2:09 amFor most audio stuff I use bhphotovideo.com or musiciansfriend.com their prices are comparable, service is good
You can buy the XM8500 for $19.95, you can also get a Behringer mixer fairly cheap if you want to use your sound card. -

April 24, 2007 at 12:07 amAFAIK – SM57 made in USA ( mine are ), Behringer made in China – for those who care about those things
