Dell Precision 5530 w/Nvidia Quadro P2000 freezes enough to drive you crazy. Solved.
It’s not IT department policy to give us server class workstations–laptops only. I pointed out that video editing is a unique use case, but they could not grant a variance.
So they replaced my old Dell T3500 with this monster Dell Precision 5530 laptop w/Nvidia Quadro P2000, 1 TB SSD, six cores, 32 GB ram. When it ran, it was beautiful. Much faster. Rendering was 5 times faster. But often while doing the simplest of edits, it would just freeze the video frame in the preview window. If I was quick I could click stop and not lock the program up. But in many cases Vegas was locked, and I had to kill the process and restart. This happened about 40 times a day. Lost much work. Driving me crazy. I can’t just drop the cursor here and there on the timeline without a nice, stately 8 second wait while the preview window took its time to update. And those are 8 seconds while I wonder if it is going to lock up the program, a real possibility.
I suspected it was some goofy power profile idiocy done by Dell to optimize the laptop for battery life or some other thing that was of no interest to me. I found out there is an Ultimate Performance profile in power options that will turn off all of the things Dell does to gimp Windows, your USB drives, and everything else it can get its hands on for best gimpy laptop behavior. One problem: by default that power profile choice is hidden from the user. Found this:
1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).
2. Move to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power.
3. Double-click CsEnabled and set to 0, then click OK.This restores your ability to select Ultimate Performance profile and many other things that you had been locked out of.
So I did that, then did
Battery Icon > Right Click > Power Options > Choose or customize a power plan > Ultimate Performance
to choose the Ultimate Performance Profile.After rebooting, it has now been 1 and 1/2 days and it’s like a new machine. No freezing. Only 1 lock up in 8 hours of editing–about what I used to get. If you have to edit with a laptop, this is something you should look into.

Hi Nicholas! Well this took me waaaaayyy back to my first serious Editing setup: Dell Inspiron 6000. Yes, the Power Management needed to be “fixed” so it wouldn’t keep checking it’s own Power/Battery status. even though it was connected to the mains. The other thing was the Management of the Fans! I have to say it was madness, but I made it stable.
