    Hi,

First time posting in this area, so I’ll do the best to explain the problem as I can.

I have a Panasonic AG-HMC150 and two Sandisk 16 GB Extreme SDHC cards, class 10. It has a max storage of 97 min. at the highest quality I’m recording in (1080p 30 fps). I filmed for a bit and had 71 min. left, so I transferred the files to my computer and then deleted them off the SDHC card by my camera.

The problem is that it says I still only have 71 min. left and not 97, why is it not freeing the space even though the clips have been deleted? And they have been deleted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

I formatted the SDHC card and it now shows the full 97 min. of free space. Problem is solved, but could someone explain (in detail would be great) why it wouldn’t show it before?

Also, could someone explain if it’s wrong to format every so often? I heard it’s not that great because it takes up the life span of the card.

    Thanks!!

You should always format- deleting leaves some metadata and various information. Just make absolutely certain you have the footage backed up first. Personally I treat SDHC cards as use-once media and store them as my archive. They’re so cheap compared to an average production day- why not?

When you delete files from removable media (using a MAC) you need to empty the “trash bin” before that space is available for you to use.

Read/write life for newer flash media is in the thousands (from what I have read.) Also when formatting a flash card the controller doesn’t actually erase each byte location, it simply erases the pointers to blocks of data. For these reasons I wouldn’t worry too much about how often you format cards.
