DELETE unused time in TIMELINE
Posted by Bruno Simon on December 8, 2009 at 9:10 pmHi,
I have a time line with 56 minutes but I´m only using 12 of them, the rest is empty. How can I redefine the time in my timeline? How can I just have a 14 minutes timeline as I don’t need 56 minutes any more cause I edited it already.
Many Thanks,

December 8, 2009 at 10:53 pmafter you edit something out, you should do a “post-edit-ripple” and it will automatically remove the time from the timeline.
you can also use this function to remove time from previous edits…. just select the section you want to remove, delete it (even tho there is nothing there), and then do the post-edit-ripple.

December 9, 2009 at 12:31 amI tried your suggestions and I can not reduce my timeline. I just have clips at the first 12 minutes. the rest are empty. How can I reduce my timeline? I don’t want a 56 minutes timeline as I just have media files in the first 12 minutes. I tried select the extra timeline i don´t want and press delete but nothing happened…
Hope you could help…
thanks,

December 9, 2009 at 12:54 amI’m not sure I understand what you’re saying here. Are you saying that you have some blank time line ***AT THE END***? if this is the case then you don’t need to worry about it. Vegas is smart enough to figure out there is nothing there and not include it in the final render.
If you have blank space IN BETWEEN 2 clip then just drag the clips together. If you turn on ripple edit then these gaps will automatically close when you remove some thing.

December 9, 2009 at 12:58 amthat´s exactly what im saying. I have NOTHING from the 12th minute till the 56th minute and I want to reduce the timeline. Its not a case of trusting vegas smartness, its a question of having ONLY a 12 minute timeline. Is that possible? thanks, bruno

December 9, 2009 at 1:21 amNo, there´s NOTHING AFTER the 12th minute. Between the 12th minute and the 56th there´s nothing. Timeline ends on the 56th minute. So, I want to delete (REDUCE) the timeline to 13 or 14 minutes, I just don´t want to have a 56 minute timeline when i´m just using the first 12 minutes.
Can I do this? Thanks, Bruno -

December 9, 2009 at 1:31 amBruno, what’s confusing us is your reference to the 56 minute mark.
If there’s nothing after the 12 minute mark, then your timeline is 12 min. long and can’t possibly be any longer.Do me a favour here.
Place your cursor at the beginning of the timeline, press the Go to End button (looks like a FFWD icon) and see where it ends up.
If it ends at the 12 min. mark, then your timeline is 12 min. long.
If it ends at the 56 min. mark, zoom in and delete whatever is at the point.
In older versions, I would sometimes get a sliver of black (less than a frame in length) that would mess me up as it was unexpected. -

December 9, 2009 at 1:36 amTo the best of my knowledge there is no way to control the length of the time line itself after a project has been initially dropped onto it. The length is set by the first set of clips that you drop on it and it will grow when you add more. But SHORTENING it is not really necessary at all. You can have HOURS of nothing after your last clip and it will not be reflected in the final render so the issue is little more than cosmetics.
Is there any specific need for what you ask?

December 9, 2009 at 1:48 amyes, its more a cosmetic thing…. Cause I have loads of minutes with nothing and I can´t reduce the timeline…. If there is no way to control the length of the time line itself after a project has been initially dropped there´s nothing to do… That was exactly what happened. I drop a 56 minute clip and now after editing I have a 12 minute film… If I can´t do anything, better not to think more on this subject. Any clue how to import subtitles exported from ARCHITECT into VEGAS? Cause there´s an option to export for Vegas use on Architect, but no import option on vegas….Thanks, bruno
