  • Deinterlace a video?

Posted by Allen Zagel on August 8, 2007 at 11:32 am

I’m trying to create a WMV file of a 1 minute clip from the timeline. A portion of the entire video. Using Swish Video 2 to make a flash video. In the Swish forum, the fellow helping me mentioned something about de-interlacing the video. Okay, I lost it! What’s that?

I know when I put a bunch of still photos on the timeline I go to switches and check the “Reduce Interlace Flicker”. Is that it?

Ha! In all my years with Vegas I never heard of or thought of de-interlacing a video. Can someone enlighten me on this please?

    Thanks
    Allen

He means to render the video out in progressive mode, not interlaced. Each frame is a whole picture. You will find it listed in the presets on most of the render menus. Look for “24p” or “30p.” The “p” is for progressive.

    Hi Jerry
Don’t see it. Those 24p or 30p are shown for HD. This is a SD and I’m rendering for WMV. Hmmmmm.

[Allen Zagel] “the fellow helping me mentioned something about de-interlacing the video. Okay, I lost it! What’s that?”

For the project, File – Properties and change the “Field Order” to NONE. Also pick your deinterlace method there. The help file has a very good description of these settings.

Some of the renderers also have this same option of changing the field order to “None” when going into the “custom” settings.

    Hi Ed
Thanks. That explains it better. I’ll check the help file.

Normally I wouldn’t want to do this? Under what circumstances would I do this?

Actually I’m only picking a portion fo the entire video. I don’t think I shoud change the properties for the entire video just to get 1 minute worth?

Maybe I should render as DV-AVI and start a new project withy that clip, then render to WMV with your suggestions above?

    Allen,

I believe your barking up the wrong tree. What the tech support guy was probably referring to was a Flash rendering option of deinterlacing your final Flash video. Many Flash encoders have a deinterlacing option. It is best to use an AVI file to encode to Flash rather than a WMV.

    Hi Charlie

Thanks much. Now I understand. Only for encoding to Flash! Yea, I was going in the wrong direction then.

Actually Swish Video 2 will de-interlace but the other fellow said it would be better if I did it in Vegas and that’s what started this thread. 😉

I’ll try it both ways. Let SV2 do it and get a seperate clip in a new Vegas Project file (copy/paste) and try it in the properties ad Ed suggested above.

    Thanks again

Render straight to wmv, which by default is progressive (non-interlaced).

    Okay Thanks Gary

So that’s why the Swish Video fellow told me WMV was the better choice. Now all I got to do i figure out bitrates size (he suggested 480 x 320) 15fps (Using MX) But now I got the ON2 VP6 video codec 6.4.2 installed so now I have the Flash 8 encoding option in Swish Video.

I don’t know if installing that codec will have any effect in Vegas or not though as an encode option also.

What threw me was he said he zoomed in on my video and said it looked like I forgot to de-interlace when I rendered to WMV. You said Vegas does that automatically?

Anyway have a look at what we’re talking about…..

    Original WMV file….

Flash conversion probably version 3 ha ha……

Why would you want to start off with a compressed (WMV) then compress it again into a Flash video. Don’t you think it would be best to start with an uncompressed AVI file and compress it into a Flash video?
