I have my .veg and .avi files on an internal drive and render all mpg2 and AC3 files for DVD production onto an external drive. Often these latter files get overwritten many times as changes are made. My question is, would it be of any benefit to defrag the external drive before preparing and burning a DVD master to send to the replicator?

It shouldn’t make any difference in terms of DVD mastering, however defragmenting your drives occasionally is a good practice to follow to keep access speed optimal.

Like Garry said, it won’t matter now. But it’s a good idea to do it BEFORE you start a new project.

Diskeeper is the way to go… ‘Set is and forget it’. Been using it for 7-years or so, great product.

    Hi
I’ve been using Perfect Disk by Raxco. It also does offline defrag of the MBR and swap files when it re-boots. Don’t know for sure if Disk keeper does that. And at last check, Perfect disk was the only one “approved” by Microsoft for large HD’s and XP. You can also “set-it-and-forget-it”.

Early on I use to get error messages when trying to render my time line. After a lot of research, I determined that Vegas was ‘asking’ me to defrag he hard drive. Don’t ask me to explain because I can’t but now I always defrag before rendering to the final medium and I don’t have any problems.
