  Defining shortcuts in OSX

  I am an OSX newbie. I saw in the system preferences you can define your own shortcuts. However, I’m not sure how that works. For instance I want to do a shortcut for the rename function in finder, as opposed to having to double click on the word. Does anyone know how this feature works?
