We just installed a Decklink card on G5 dual 2.5 Ghz and then rented a Sony J-30 playback deck to take in clips for a project shot in DigiBeta. We found that the J-30 has RS232C device control, which means it won’t work with the Decklink without an adapter (which we don’t have). So I tried switching device control in FCP 5.1.1 over to Firewire PAL (with Sequence and Capture settings both set to Blackmagic PAL 10-bit). That worked in terms of controlling the deck. But we continue to get No Video Input on the Log & Capture Screen and on the screen that pops up when we try to batch capture, even though the deck is being controlled properly through FW as we can see on the monitor through the S Viideo Out. So I assume the Decklink card won’t work with FW device control. What’s strange is that it seems we should at least be able to see the video coming through. So I’m wondering if the card itself is working. I’m also wondering if there’s any workaround for this situation, because renting this deck is expensive and the meter’s running.

You can plug your decklink into the RS422-port on the J-30.

You’ll also have to specify what video-input you’re using in the control panel.

Thanks, but a bit confused. Aside from the RS 232, there’s only a Remote In (9 Pin). And it’s female. Is that what you’re referring to?

Yves, thanks that worked. We now have deck control. But still no video input. I have the connections set up as follows:

Decklink SDI Input to Video Output Composite (Super) on Sony J-30
Decklink SDI Output to External Sync of Sony J-30

in FCP 5.1.1 I have it set to:

Sequence Preset: Blackmagic Pal – 10 Bit
Capture Preset: Blackmagic Pal – 10 Bit
Device Control Preset: Blackmagic Pal 25 Hz
Video Playback: None (although I’ve tried Blackmagic 10-Bit, 8-Bit and RGB with no results)

Is there somewhere else that I need to specify the video input device? Or any other ideas on what I’m doing wrong?

    Hi,

Is you J-30 the model with SDI outputs?

SDI is a digital video connection and will not work with the analog composite output of the deck. This is probably why you’re not getting video input. The DeckLink card is SDI only.

It’s an SDI deck (https://www.globalmediapro.com/video/products/Sony_J30_SDI_Compact_Universal_Player–1162.html). The video output I have it connected to is the Composite (Super) output. It has Component Outputs Y, R-Y and B-Y. But I didn’t think I could use those unless I had the corresponding inputs on my Decklink.

Composite is analog. This will not work on an SDI input.
You should connect your house sync (also known as black-burst or BB) to the ref of the J30. If you don’t have house sync, don’t connect it.
The only thing you should do is connect SDI-OUT of the J30 to the SDI-IN of the decklink.

[Fly Films Shanghai] “It has Component Outputs Y, R-Y and B-Y.”

If I’m not wrong, the SDI version of the J30 does not have component Y, R-Y and B-Y output. Please double check the availability of SDI ports on your deck.

    Hi,

Following on from the other posts within this thread, I have connected my Blackmagic DeckLink card to two Sony J-30s – one being the SDI based model and the other being composite input (B-Y, R-Y and Y). The problem I am having is that video appears fine on the Blackmagic software when using the composite input but not when using the SDI input. Is this a known issue with SDI based J-30s or if not, how can I get around this problem?

    Cheers,
