Decklink Intensity JVC BR-HD50U
Posted by Patrick Woodard on February 29, 2008 at 10:39 pmTrying to capture HDV 720p via JVC BR-HD50 and have had no success. The signal coming into the capture windows blinks a few frames followed by black. I’ve contacted tech support for both JVC and Decklink with no solution. I’m running the latest drivers (1.8.3) and the latest firmware v1-08. The card is slotted in the third PCI-e slot on a dual-core Mac Pro. So far I can verify that the signal out of the deck is good, I connected it via HDMI to a plasma television and it plays fine. However, when I connect the deck to the Decklink Intensity card it only displays blinking video in the the capture window.
I replaced the Intensity card and my cable twice with new ones, the results are the same.

First off can i just confirm you are connecting to an Intesity card via HDMI (the decklink is actually a different card). Might be worth checking that your system is actually recognising the Intensity card.
If you got to Apple>>system preferences, and in the “other” section you should see the Intensity icon. If you double click on that you should see the properties for your card. If the drop downs and check boxes are greyed out then it’s not recognising your card. In which case, it would be worth reseating your card in the expansion slot, or transferring it to slot 4 (top), the recommended by Blackmagic.
If it does see your card then it may be your capture settings. Are you using Final Cut Pro? It may be worth trying the Blackmagic Deck Control application, for simplicity, just to check if the intensity is working.

March 3, 2008 at 7:11 pmI am connected Intensity card (non-pro model) via HDMI. In the system preferences the card is recognized. I have tried both FCP and Decklink control panel application to test, both produce the same result.
In addition, my source is HDV 720p 24 & HDV 720p 30, both shot on the JVC GY-HD110U.

What sort of system are you running? Do you have a RAID setup and if so how is it configured?
You said you are capturing from a deck? What happens if you try to capture directly from the camera?
Also, do you get output via HDMI from the Intensity card? If you have some footage on your machine can you hook the inensity up to your plasma and see if it plays out.

March 3, 2008 at 8:21 pmMy system is a Mac Pro Intel 2.66 Dual Core with 4GB of RAM, running OS X 10.4.11, QuickTime 7.4.1. Intensity Driver version 1.8.3. The drive configuration is apple xsan raid. I’ve tested capturing to xsan raids as well as internal harddrives.
Playback out of Intensity via HDMI plays fine.

March 3, 2008 at 10:43 pmHmm ok there is a known compatibility issue with the JVC HD50U deck and HDMI capture but the latest drivers should supercede this problem. If you are indeed having the same problem its something I’ll have to look into.

March 3, 2008 at 10:47 pmYes, I’m aware of the document on Decklink’s website, I followed it and have updated the firmware to version v108. I still am unable to get a clean signal to digitize. Video flashes a few frames a second instead of 24 or 30 frames per second.

March 4, 2008 at 5:50 pmWould you be able to find out the serial number of your Intensity cards please? There is a small number of older cards that may still have this problem but it is more likely a system issue. If i could ask you to verify your JVC firmware again please just to be sure.
Also if you have the time you might want to try rolling back your drivers and see if that helps, but again im not sure that will help sorry but might be worth trying. If you wanted to be extreme try going back to the 1.2 drivers mentioned in the faq.

The serial # for the card is B7898. I tried your suggestion and rolled back to driver 1.2. I tried testing every update up to the latest 1.8.3. none worked. I am 100% certain I’m on the right firmware for the JVC deck. At this point I think I’ll be taking the card back for a refund.

By the serial number it looks like one of the older model cards. Im going to check now for you. Which region are you in?
