Hi: I am trying to hook up my sony Z1 camera to my Deck Link HD extreme card so I can shoot some studio footage against a greenscreen. I want to shoot and capture uncompressed (by-passing the camera’s compression), but I don’t know how to hook up the camera to the card. I assume I would use the component out on the camera and use the component in on the card? If so, how do I record from the camera so the camera knows to out put through the component out? Can someone help me with all the settings I need to make to accomplish this?

I am working with a Sony Z1 HDV Camera
    FCP Studio 2
    MAC G5 quad.

I have no raid system, and was hoping I could capture as described above and then convert the captured video to ProRess for editing.

    Thanks for any help. Tim

    Hi Tim,

Yes, you would use the component output of the Z1 into the component input of the HD Extreme. The Z1’s component output is RCA while HD Extreme’s input is BNC so you’ll need to use a RCA to BNC adapter so that they play nicely.

The camera should output via the component outputs automatically but you should check the menu options in the camera to make sure it’s outputting at the format you wish to capture.

I was under the impression you could film as normal on the Z1
(ie with high GOP compression) then on capture, using the
blackmagic card, strip out the compression for larger file
    sizes without the GOP issue..
Is this not correct? I’d like to know as I am also hoping to go
    this route or similar…

Also would be interested to know how my system might cope
with this converted HDV without a RAID set up.

    Anyone?
