I’m looking at adding one of the Decklink cards to PPro 1.51 (currently with no video card, just monitoring by using a DAC from the DV out). I have a couple questions of people who have used the Decklink cards:

    1) Although they are intended as uncompressed I/O cards, what happens when you place a compressed clip on the timeline, such as a Qucktime with the animation codec. Currently, if I place a Quicktime clip in a DV sequence the PC will do the best it can to decode the Quicktime, and encode it to DV in realtime. I can usually get a single Quicktime clip to play full res, full frame in real time. If I install a Decklink card will it function in a similar way?

    2) Currently if the CPU can’t keep up with decoding/effects (and the preview setting is set to Automatic Quality), the image resolution will degrade gracefully while maintaining a full (or nearly full) frame rate. I’ve heard that the Canopus NX for SP video card (which I’m not considering) insists on displaying full resolution and full frame rate … if a frame needs to be skipped it simply stops. Will the Decklink cards degrade resolution gracefully to display a real time preview?

Are Decklink users generally happy with the product? Any significant problems?

    Thanks,
    Robert

The Decklink card works like the canopus in that it will render anything not in its preferred codec and format. With a fast system I haven’t found this to be an issue. Then again, I spend more time in After Effects the PPro so I am use to waiting for preview renders.
I have the DL Extreme since we mostly work from BetaSP. Overall I think the card works great. Tech support is very responsive to any problems and the drivers are updated often.

    Thanks for your response!

Just to be clear: If you place a clip on the timeline that is not in it’s preferred format, you see Nothing out of the card during playback for scrubbing until it’s rendered?
