In case anyone is wondering why trying to edit a photo in iPhoto causes a crash or why
they can’t use they’re iSight camera with iChat. Blame it on Apple and Blackmagic not
playing well with each other. Solution for iPhoto is to switch off the video desktop in
the Decklink control panel. For iChat you have to remove the Blackmagic Codec.component
from the QuickTime folder in the Library. Just plonk it on the desktop, start iChat and it
will work fine, you can then put the Blackmagic Codec back if you like. Until you restart
iChat it will work as it should.

    Hi Sean,

We’ll look into the iPhoto problem. Sounds similar to the one Apple had with Aperture which was fixed in on of the OS updates.

For the issue with iChat, kindly refer to this technote:

Thanks for the info. MyVCR does hog the Decklink so you can launch iChat. I wonder why the Blackmagic Deck control doesn’t do this.
Anyway thanks for the fix and your efforts in sorting out iPhoto. It only happens if you have Video Desktop enabled and you try and edit a photo inside iPhoto. Once you are finished editing and then save the app will crash.

    Hi Sean,

Blackmagic Deck Control releases the Quicktime video hardware when not active, just like Final Cut Pro and After Effects. This allows you to switch between applications that use the DeckLink hardware and still get preview output from each of them.

    Hi Sean,

You’ll be glad to know that OS X 10.4.7 solves the issue with iChat.
