Decklink 5 broke my Shake
Posted by Rory Hinds on July 24, 2005 at 8:33 pmHi there
Having done a complete reinstall of my system to get from 10.4.2 to 10.4.1 as 4.2 had ATI issues with my FinalTouchHD system, I check everything was running okay with SHake and it was… then I installed Decklink 5 and its seem to broken Shake again where I can’t see any of my Decklink HD capture footage when I do a FileIn node.
Please BMD help me get Shake up and running again.
Thanks

July 24, 2005 at 8:38 pmI’ve fotgot to mention I have tried installing the Apple Uncompressed 422 patch but this still doesn’t seem to fix it.

July 26, 2005 at 8:12 amHi Rory,
Which version of Shake are you using? Does the problem affect compressed clips (eg DV, PhotoJPEG, DVCPRO HD) as well as uncompressed clips? I’ll test this out for you when I know which version you are running.

July 26, 2005 at 10:51 amHi Luke
I’m using version 4, but have tried going back to version 3.5 and the problem persists.
It imports other codec’s find and seems to be problematic only with my Decklink media.
As mentioned I’ve tried reinstalling Shake and the Apple Uncompressed 422 and still no go.
Hopefully you can help as I have a project I need to get started on.
Thanks

July 26, 2005 at 10:05 pmHey Luke
I’ve gone back to version 3.5 and it seems to be working if I “Force8bit” otherwises its still broken.
I find this all strange as my media is all 8bit anyway.
Tiger is a very very frustrating OS and I still to understand why its better 🙂
Anyone know how to disable Dashboard?
Thanks

July 27, 2005 at 2:03 amHi Rory,
I’m not sure what’s causing your problem and here is what I tried.
I erased a disk and installed Tiger and then used Software Update to install all of the updates including Mac OS X 10.4.2. I then installed Shake 3.5 and then Shake 4.0. I then installed Final Cut Studio and then used Software Update to install all of the latest updates. This took several hours but at every stage I tested and found that the FileIn node showed the thumbnail preview of the movie. Finally I installed the DeckLink 5.0 drivers and it continued to work. Therefore I don’t think the drivers are the cause of your problem.
However, before I started all this, I had two hard disks in the G5, each running Mac OS X 10.3.8, QuickTime 6.5 Pro, Shake 3.5, Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 and DeckLink 4.8 drivers. When I started up from one disk, the FileIn node successfully showed the thumbnail preview of the movie and I was able to play the movie without problems. When I started up from the other disk, the FileIn node failed to show a thumbnail preview of the movie and nothing I tried overcome the problem.
I’m going to contact Apple and ask what might cause the thumbnail preview to be replaced with a gray icon. I can only guess that it is some kind of preference somewhere but I don’t really know. I will let you know what I find out.
Meanwhile if you are desperate and need a solution right now, you might consider starting off with a fresh install of everything as I did. This will eliminate any remnant components from previous systems which might be causing a problem.

July 27, 2005 at 10:43 amHi Luke
Thanks for taking the time and looking into this for me.
I did start from a fresh install of the OS with me actually doing a clean erase of the drive at the begining. I using Tiger 10.4.1 as 4.2 has broken my ATI X800 drivers and ATI Hotfix is only valid for version 10.4.1.
Having spend hours installing software from clean the problem still is there. I even can’t render out normal FileOut Nodes
I think its safe to say Shake doesn’t work with Tiger or Tiger doesn’t work with Shake, or more to the point Tiger sucks!
Only wish Apple wakes up and pays some attention to its Pro users as it seems these days Apples all about consumer toys and not powerful tools 🙁
I guess I need to revert to After Effects to get some work done.
Thanks

July 28, 2005 at 8:34 amMaybe there is something up with final touch or X800 drivers because my shake works under 10.4.2 and decklink HD pro very nice (both apple and bmd codecs)
