  • Davinci RUNNING OUT OF MEMORY??

Posted by Chris Jacobson on November 11, 2011 at 3:56 am

    Hi All,

I’m an experienced user having problems with my Davinci Resolve 8.1. Running on a MAC tower, red rockets,Nvidia, full panels, etc.

My session in under 20 minutes in length.

Occasionally I get an error, ” Running out of memory” .. How can I resolve this issue?

    Thanks,

    Chris Jacobson

I guess you might have a number of clips in the media pool that are not used. these use RAM resources. Your 20 min timeline is good so I would look at Media pool next.

The clips were added based on an edl………Only the clips needed for the project are in the media pool.

What’s the source? I’ve experienced some slow down with RED Epic, but that’s nothing I didn’t expect.

    Hi,

we have the exact same problems here. We’re running a MacPro with the following PCI setup:

    Slot01 Nvidia Geforce GT120
Slot02 host adapter for Cubix PCI extender
    Slot03 Decklink HD
    Slot04 fibrechannel card

    Cubixbox:

    Slot01 – Slot03 Nvidia Quadro FX 4000
    Slot04 RedRocket card

    Its a Mac Pro 5.1 / 6 core 2,66GHz / 12GB ram.

We’re working on different sized projects from 5 min up to 90 min (REDOne MX / EPIC / ALEXA ProRes). We’re getting this exact same error message every once in a while, working on these projects.

We already tried to work with just one, two and three GPU cards attached. Tried to work in proxy mode with these setups without any luck.

Next step would be to get the cubix out and start from the recommended setup. Since this is a time consuming trial and error process and we have lot of work to do we need to wait until we have all the projects through…

    Any suggestions out there??

    Best,
    Severin

Is all of your media the same?

I’ve gotten “out of memory” errors a few times when I had a project that was 99% one thing (ProRes, RED, etc.) but one 1-2 shots that were memory hogs. The example I’m thinking off was a time-lapse shot made with a still camera, so it was 5000 or more pixels across, and they had baked it into animation codec, so this one 3 second shot was clogging the memory in Da Vinci.

Got rid of that shot and the error went away.

We have mixed footage in the timelines we’re working on (REDOne MX, 5D/7D and GoPro or Alexa mixed with 5D/7D). But the DSLR Clips are all HD. Today we’re testing our system with just one single GPU card in the cubix box. So far the issues we had like random crashes and “running out of memory” messages are gone…

    We’ll see.

Chris, what is your system setup? Are you using cubix and/or several GPU cards?

The source footage is mostly red one with some occasional 5d and some transcoded p2.

The red epic slows down when doing HDRx footage..you can add another Red rocket card and your problem with the epic footage will be solved….however this is not my particular problem.

we have the same similar set-up but with two nvidia 400 in the cubix.

The only thing I have tried so far to work temporarily is to delete some unwanted sessions from the user. Then from the Log-in page select. Manage database and then hit the optimize button. This seems to help for a while but it’s just a band aid because the error will return at some point.

We definitely have a mixed bag of media. Red mostly with some 5d and some P2 that we transcoded.

Yep, Cubix one red rocket and 2 nvidia 4000.

FYI- I have had this error on all versions of software starting with 7.
