    Hi all,

I have been trying to work with DRS in linux for some time. My last catastrophe here was in the past several days. I ran out of space and though I have enough external SSDs-and while one was plugged in, I could not export or save my file project to the external source.. Can anyone explain this? Though I tried to input a path to an external drive, I could not. So a long hard worked project I had invested alot of time on was essentially a waste of time and I had to do it all over again on Mac.

My next question here is that I have night time footage of a party involving a flame thrower and such that was shot with an iphone. The video quality is NOT impressive at all. I also have footage of the same taken from another camera in slow motion (an android) and that was quite impressive. How can I make the iphone footage more closely resemble the other in detail and quality? I don’t know if I want to sharpen it or not. I don’t know what I really need to do to make it look more impressive. Can anyone help?

I’m not an expert but a basic thought for you. Davinci stores projects in a database. So it’s not a simple question of writing a file to any available drive as far as I am aware.

On the night shots with a flamethrower. This is – I’m guessing – primarily a question of exposure and tonal scale range. Perhaps one of the clips is exposed for good shadow detail but the bright highlights are burned out and maybe the other is exposed so the highlight detail is present but the shadows are just black blotches. It’s a daunting task better attempted with a camera with better controls and less automation I think.

    Hey Osmael,

Dare I ask out of curiosity, why Linux?

I suspect that it might be the formatting of the external drive or a security “blockage” somewhere. There are a fair bit of posts and guides in a variety of places if you search “Linux not writing to external drive” on Google.

But it could also be a bug in the software.

Maybe, if you have the space for it, export a smaller size file just to check that you can export out of Davinci.

On the phone footage, it could be something as simple as the iPhone shooting LOG, in which case try a Color Space Transform (CST) before going crazy on trying to match the shots manually.
There are plenty of posts here on the COW where Mobile Phone has looked rubbish, just because it was not “converted” on import. Some NLE’s are now doing that as standard.

If it is just a rubbish shoot using an old phone, then you will need to match the two sources. Again, many of the NEL’s has that functionality built in.

But if you need something that looks closer at the imaging chip on the “camara”, you might want to look at Cinematch. If nothing else, just to get an idea of what is possible.

    Hope this helps?

Thanks! As far as linux, I tried looking it up online. In the past I tried calling Black Magic and speaking to the techs there, ( i think I know all of them by now) They will NOT help and claim to not support linux. A fast way to get you off the phone.

As far as the the phone, I followed a simple little tutorial here on you tube and it helped slightly. But I’m still not too happy with it overall. I’m going to continue to investigate. Before I come to the forums, I usually look online first. I’m extra aggravated here because the footage in question is what remains after a catastrophic loss of files because I had to buy a USB memory drive which turned out to be counterfeit and I relied on it to save some files in order to continue filming over seas. I was able to retrieve some back after going beyond my technical comfort zone at the loss of more time. If anyone has more imput here, please, please post something. It is so disturbing to have to work with poor quality footage.

…Oh and as far as why Linux? I have wanted to be less dependent on the two big tech platforms and always have an alternative. I absolutely hate microsoft/Windows and though Mac is much more reliable, Apple still tries to put you in their bubble and I don’t like to be controlled and not have choices and such!

    Hey Osmael,

Nothing worse than losing footage due to counterfeit storage, or errors made in manufacturing and software release by manufacturers who should have known better.

I know that it is easy to suggest using a cloud backup whilst in production, as these cost money + you need to have the badwidth to upload files. And, rearely the client don’t want to pay for that.

With regard to Linux, I hear you loud and clear. I many years ago went against the tide and settled for Windows NEL applications. Mainly because all of my corporate clients were PC based and using Windows Media Player. That is less of a “selling point” these days, if anything a PC today running Windows 11 takes me back to the days of bad memories with Microsoft Vista…

You are not the only one who is having problems with Davinci on Linux (recent video – do read the comments section):

I don’t understand Linux, and if I was Blackmagic, I would maybe consider removing it from the line-up if it can not be supported – as in that Linux users could risk that happening if too many people are getting upset about the Linux version.

As with both PC and Mac versions for other NLE software packages not working on a operating system, Adobe comes to mind, one way of checking it. Is by rolling back a couple of software versions until you find a Davinci Resolve version that you know to work on Linux.

With regard to the footage, unless you share it, you’ll find it difficult for anyone to give you advice on it.

If it is because one of the camera sources are a low-res proxy, before doing the grade it is always worth running it through Topaz Video or similar.
