    Hi,

I’m having a huge problem with getting an EDL across from FCP (latest version) to DaVinci Resolve (Mac version 7.1).

    In FCP:
I have now made a test project in FCP containing 3 different bits from the same clip (file).
There’s no dissolves, filters or speed changes and there’s only one video track!
I export the EDL in CX3600 format and reel name should correspond with the limitations in CX3600.

    In DaVinci Resolve:
I have set up the project to get the reel name from the parent folder and that works fine.
Then i add the file to the media pool.
Next i go to conform and open the EDL which comes in without errors.

Master session with the entire file comes in fine with previews, BUT the timeline has red crosses and no preview. However the length of the 3 cuts in the timeline has the correct length.

I have tried a huge bunch of combinations on how the EDL’a has been exported etc. but now i really need a hint where to look next!

Looking forward to hearing from someone 🙂

If you open up the conform page, it will show you imported EDL’s events (lower left hand box). Can you look to see that the event reels as read from the EDL math the reels in the clips in your media pool?

    Hi Mark,

I expect Timecode Problems. DaVinci needs Reelnames and TC from the Metadata! Check if the QT Clips have Timecode Tracks. Especially DSLR Cameras Record no TC Tracks to the Files. Have a Look to the Metadata in the Bin at FCP.

    Hi MArco,

You are quite right i think.

The footage was from 5d mk2 shot at 29.97 fps, ingested with FCP via the E1 plugin. Then conformed to 25 fps, as i wanted it to slow down a little and didn’t need the audio. BUT i guess that the reconform after the ingest and generation of TC messed up the files.

2nd time around i started out reconforming the original files (copies of them of course) and then ingested them and created timecode and woila….it all worked out!

But thank you very much for your replies both of you 🙂

Yeah, DSLR files are tricky to work with. You may want to have a look at the free QtChange next time, which can add a TC track (derived from creation date).

Also, if you have any say in your production’s editing/conforming process, I highly recommend you push them to use this app:

    https://rarevision.com/5dtorgb/#features

Which seems to be able to add timecode as well.

A client who usually brings me 5D footage recently switched to this app for their conforming. I definitely noticed a lot more room to play around with in terms of color. So it didn’t seem like just a bunch of voodoo.

You can force a ‘dummy’ reel ID into FCP before making an EDL, for all your ‘non reel ID’ canon clips. This then allows Resolve to recognise the clips without conflict even though all start from 00:00:00:00 TC.

How would you go about doing that?

Click in the REEL column in the FCP Browser. Enter a unique reel ID for each Canon clip (or, any exported/flattened composites) and your set to export EDL. Resolve will not recognise a TC clash due to the unique reel naming. Happy conforming!

Quite a tedious workaround! QtChange can assign reel IDs too – in batch…

Took me 17 minutes to unique reel name 90 minute prog, 800 edits. 8 weeks edit (not by me but respecting the work done so far!!), 17 minutes not so bad in my workflow to change 120 un-reel ID’d shots. If QTCHANGE does this well then thats good too….I don’t regret my 17 minutes carefully prepping for a feature length grade. Let us know how well it works.
