DaVinci Resolve 14 for Final Cut Pro 7 Users
Posted by David Lawrence on September 19, 2017 at 5:55 pmLost count of how many times she says “Just like in Final Cut Pro 7” but I found myself smiling quite a lot. ???? At $299 it’s a no-brainer no matter what your current NLE of choice.

And/or free. Plus both versions (with slight changes) are in the App Store, too.

September 19, 2017 at 6:43 pmI am not sure that Resolve would be my choice as an NLE as it still has some stability issues. As for cutting a feature it might be my first choice but Final Cut fits my needs for now.

There are actually some high-level feature film cutters who are evaluating it as the NLE to choose. Typically their cuts go on to Resolve for grading and finishing, so losing the roundtrip is attractive.
Of course, of the ones I’ve personally spoken with, it’s only testing. Avid MC continues to be their axe of choose.

September 19, 2017 at 7:27 pmDR has come a long way over the past 3 years. DR 14 looks very impressive. I was told Adobe is aware of BMD’s offerings. Adobe is going to have to bring there A-Game to NAB 2018. DR has some cool filters and the Fairlight integrations is awesome. Adobe needs to merge Audition into Premiere Pro as well as After Effects. The integration between programs is not bad but a merging of the programs would be even better. Adobe wasted a lot of time and effort creating a new titling systems that as of now is worse than what we had before. The Essential Graphics Panel is supposed to get better over time but I think it might have been better to release it at NAB 2018 when it was 100% ready.

That’s a huge plus for people like me. Its the double roundtrip if the audio is finished in Fairlight.
I think a lot will depend on the collaborative workflow tools and just how well that works in real world applications. I think Avid is far more BM’s target but as David L points out, hold out Legend editors are a prime target.

September 20, 2017 at 1:19 amIf your value logic is sound, then every AVID, Premiere Pro, and DaVinci editor should also see owning a personal copy of the $299 FCP X as a “no brainer” as well.
Cool.

Not every Avid, Premiere Pro or Resolve editor is a Mac user. ☺

Except that unlike every other NLE you listed, X is not cross platform. Uncool

September 20, 2017 at 1:31 amDang, you are correct. I forgot about all the editors that switch back and forth between the Macs and PCs sitting side by side on their desks.
(File under “owner/management class problems” maybe?)

“I have a dual system but I’ll confess that I spend 98% of my working time on the PC side.
I also think that if Resolve lives up to the hype it’s been receiving that it might be a real player. The process of prepping projects in Premiere to send to a Resolve colorist gets old fast.
