DAT Tapes
Hi,
Here’s my issue. I have a pile of DAT tapes that I want to digitize into Final Cut Pro.
Since I don’t think there was ever a DAT machine with firewire out, I decided to try a converter box. I am playing with something called a the Firewire Solo made by M-Audio. I have an RCA cable (video) connecting the Digital Coaxial output with the s/pdif input on the box. The box is then connected to my Mac with a firewire. The FCP is able to detect this box, but I don’t have a signal coming through. DOes anyone know anything about this box and if it will do what I want it to do. Or, does anyone have other suggestions about digitizing DAT tapes.

Do you have the sample rates matching on all devices? I don’t know that box but there may be issues as to who is clock master. I suggest making the computer the clock source, although you haven’t specified the type and model of the DAT machine.
Another option is to go straight into the G5 spdif input. You will need to convert coaxial spdif to optical spdif.

Thanks for making me think about that. The M-Audio device has a software button which toggles between internal and external sync. I switched it to external and it worked.
