April 18, 2013 at 4:49 pm[Richard Cardonna] “They can make upgrading available only from a previous version. Any prior version can also upgrade but for a higher cost”
Yeah…they’ve done that before…and the “upgrade every other version” guys tossed a fit about that…because they all felt they were being abused.
It also means that Adobe has to have a product code for every possible upgrade scenario…CS4 to CS6…CS5 to CS6…CS5.5 to CS6…every point product…every suite…suddenly one simple software upgrade is actually three products…resellers have to now stock three different SKUs because they each sell for a separate price…the overhead cost was ridiculous, not to mention all the specific serial number dependencies, etc.
Adobe has been streamlining this whole process based on user feedback, and they’ve likely been able to see some decreased costs as well…good for them, they’re a business.
Again, we expect software companies to give us more and more while we pay less and less…it’s unsustainable.
Posting 80% of your revenue in a quarter followed by three quarters of heavy investment and expense is not a plan many of us would want to operate a business on…I know some are shocked by this change coming now…I’m a little surprised we didn’t see it 5 years ago as the CS era synchronized all the applications’ release timelines and really created massive revenue peaks and valleys.
Adobe will be giving details on all this shortly, so I’d ask those of you who are guessing they will sell your identity and charge hotel movies to your credit card to chill a bit until some factual information is released.

April 18, 2013 at 5:14 pmI am sure that any cost in keeping codes if any would be greatly upset buy the cost of upgrading and could posibly lead to more cloud or maintanence upgrading from previous grades. Cs6 would cost what is current, from previuos version would cost more until a new lic would appear a bettr solution. Isnt this better than casting away thousands of users? Its a way of squeezing out more money and at the same time giving options.

April 18, 2013 at 9:04 pmnah sure – it’d just be weird somehow if the whole model went to rental is all. It’s more a reaction than anything.
