    Hey FRIENDS,

iam posting here because iam sure this is a very stupid question…

If i have a new fast macpro and a Blackmagic HD Extreme cardis it possible with a rented D5 deck to capture the footage full res??

What if any options do I have for capturing?

    Thanks in advance…

What hard drive array are you using? That’s more important than the card.

By Full Res I assume you mean Uncompressed 8 or 10bit HD. That requires a LOT of speed.s

    hey walter
thank you so much for the fast reply – you are the best : )

SO Both edit suites available to me have RAID configurations – I believe one is just a RAID 0 box on top of my tower in the machine room and the other is an apple xserve with a couple drives in it in RAID – both have 1-4 TB’s of space. This is nto going to be that much footage in that its for commercial.

There is also a fibre RAID connected to a flame room – linux machine so my it guy says that actualyl is the FASYEST connection but obv we would rather have it done on FCP as opposed to Flame at $110 an hour : )

Is uncompressed 10 bit going to be the highest possible capture format? – I’ve actually never captured D5 only HDCAM (SR) is the highest quality besides RED which is obv not tape.

In terms of resolution – can i expect D5 to be 1920 x 1080 or can it come in different flavors and frame rates etc??

    thanks again

You want your array to be running about 300MB/s in order to do uncompressed 10bit HD.

I think most often D5 is 720p though we rarely work with the stuff. It’s been a few years since I’ve had to deal with anything from D5 and that was 720p.

So i guess when the D5 deck and tapes come in i’ll have to figure out what format the fottage is in – and how they want me to actually capture it – i could in theory bring it in at 29.97 – adding pulldown on the fly no ?

How might i best determine my drive speed – are there programs or something similar to test drive speeds?

Any other info you might have for me to be aware of as the deck and taoes are coming in first thing tomorrow i want to be as prepared for this as poss.

thanks again Walter and if anyone else has thoughts please feel free to drop the wisdom – in that i tried searching here for D5 threads and came up empty.

I just downloaded AJA’s system speed test but no clue how to set everything properly for what this capture will involve.

    holler back Walter B!

If it’s 720/59.94 you don’t want to do that. Leave it at 59.94

BlackMagic has some tests. I have no idea what’s included with your card as we run only AJA products here. With AJA it’s called the AJA System Test.

I can tell you that it takes a minimum of 5 drives striped together in an array to run Uncompressed HD. We have 8 drive striped together for 500MB/s+.

As I have no experience with BlackMagic products other than testing them a while back, I really don’t know what to tell you. Hopefully the deck will be properly set up for you before you get it and hopefully the card can properly drive that machine.

    Hello

So i just found my blackmagic disk speed test app and plan to run that test on the raid i have – i believe the exserve raid is going too be much faster and i will try ot get a hold of the deck rental people in order to make sure everything is set properly for this…

    thank you
