I have created a grey scale animation 1 second long and would like to use it as a matte for a transition between two layers. Now I have two ways of do this, neither of which I’m convinced are the best way of doing this.

My first way of doing this is to take the layer that I am transitioning to and splitting it at the point that the transition ends so I have the 1st second of the clip overlapping the previous shot. I can then apply the grey scale matte as a luma matte to this small section. My problem with this is that if I want to change the timings of the shot I have two layers that I need to change.

My second way of doing this is to freeze the grey scale animation at the end of the transition and apply this to the whole of the second clip. My problem with this is that I end up with two layers for every clip I want to add this transition to and this doesn’t seem very elegant.

Is there a tidier way of doing this. Am I missing something obvious? It is early on a Friday morning at the end of a long week.

    Cheers

I don’t know if it will do what you want, but you should look at Transition>Gradient Wipe.
